The Short Version

I bought this raincoat before a trip to Italy and Switzerland hoping I would not need it. Then Lake Como got hit by a severe rainstorm, the streets flooded, cars were stuck outside our hotel window, and we were stranded an extra night with nowhere to go but out into it. I wore this jacket all day long and stayed completely dry. For under twenty five dollars it is one of the smartest purchases I have made.

Why I Bought It

When my husband and I started planning our trip to Italy and Switzerland last fall, I knew that European weather in September is unpredictable at best. There would be a lot of walking, a lot of outdoor touring, and the kind of days where the sky can turn on you without much warning. I wanted a lightweight hooded raincoat that would pack small enough to not eat up suitcase space and perform well enough to actually keep me dry if things went sideways.

I found this one on Amazon and at the price point I figured if it did not work out I could return it and try something else. It had everything I was looking for. A hood, bilateral hip pockets, a drawstring waist to give a little shape without being restrictive, and a wine red colorway with a white and blue pinstripe lining inside the hood that looked genuinely cute rather than purely utilitarian. I am dark complected with dark brown hair and dark brown eyes and deep jewel tones always work well on me.

Amazon recommended a small for my five foot three, one hundred and fifteen pound frame and that is exactly what I ordered.

The Real Life Experience

This jacket got its real test not on a light drizzle kind of day but on the kind of day that makes travel stories worth telling.

We were in Lake Como when a severe rainstorm rolled in and created mudslides on the train tracks. We were stranded. Could not leave. When we woke up that morning the road in front of our hotel was flooded and there were cars sitting stuck in the water that had nowhere to go. We had an entire unplanned extra day in Lake Como with rain coming down hard and nowhere to be but out in it.

I wore this jacket all day. Every hour of that flooded, mudslide delayed, unexpectedly extended Italian layover. And I stayed dry. The hood was especially valuable for me because I wear contacts and even a light rain hitting my eyes is miserable. The hood kept the rain off my face completely and stayed up without constantly sliding back.

Beyond Italy I have worn it on cool fall evenings in Maine, out to dinner with friends, and for outdoor tasks while we were packing up our home before our move to Florida in late October. It layers easily over whatever you are wearing and does not add bulk or weight. It folds down into almost nothing and took up a fraction of the space a traditional rain jacket would in a suitcase.

I have not had much occasion to wear it in Florida because the weather simply does not call for it, but it is packed and ready for the next trip that does.

What I Love

The real world waterproof performance is the headline. This is not a jacket that keeps you dry in a light mist and gives up in real rain. Lake Como in a severe storm is about as demanding a test as a raincoat can face and it held up completely. The hood, the bilateral pockets, the drawstring waist, and the cheerful pinstripe lining all feel like thoughtful design choices rather than afterthoughts. And the wine red color photographs beautifully.

What I Would Change

Nothing. I bought it for a specific purpose, a packable waterproof hooded jacket that would not weigh down my suitcase or my shoulders, and it delivered completely. At under twenty four dollars the value is genuinely hard to argue with.

Who This Is Perfect For

Any woman who travels and wants reliable rain protection without the bulk of a traditional rain jacket. It is also a great option for anyone who needs a lightweight layer for cool evenings, outdoor events, or unpredictable weather without committing to something heavy. If you are planning a trip to Europe or anywhere else where the weather has opinions of its own, this belongs in your bag before you leave.

The Verdict

I hoped I would not need this jacket on my trip to Italy and Switzerland. Then Lake Como flooded and I wore it all day in a severe rainstorm and stayed completely dry. That is the kind of test that tells you everything you need to know. Lightweight, packable, genuinely waterproof, and pretty enough that you will not mind wearing it. Under twenty four dollars and worth every penny.
